Infant Nutrition
Infant Nutrition Intro
Infant Nutrition is a major concern for new parents. BirthRoot Community Doula can provide guidance, reassurance, and practical tips. We are here to empower parents to trust their instincts and decisions regarding feeding, reminding them that every baby is unique and to validate their efforts, especially when they face societal pressures or feel judged about their feeding choices.
Formula Feeding
Whether a family chooses to formula-feed from the beginning, uses formula to supplement breastfeeding, or transitions to formula due to breastfeeding challenges, our doulas are here to encourage and offer guidance in this choice.
- Breastmilk or Formula: Our doulas provide nonjudgmental support, whether the family is using expressed breastmilk or formula.
- Safe Preparation: We teach families how to properly prepare formula, clean bottles, and store milk safely.
- Responsive Feeding: Encourage parents to practice paced bottle feeding to support the infant’s natural hunger and fullness cues.
Breast Feeding
Offering guidance on breastfeeding techniques and addressing common challenges.
- Emotional Support: Our doulas help the birthing parent feel confident about breastfeeding, normalize challenges, and encourage them to seek help when needed.
- Positioning and Latching: We offer guidance on proper breastfeeding positions and techniques to encourage a good latch.
- Troubleshooting: Recognizing common issues (e.g. sore nipples, engorgement, or low milk supply) and connecting families with lactation consultants if needed.
- Educating Partners: Teaching non-birthing partners how they can support breastfeeding, such as helping with positioning or creating a relaxing environment.
Feeding Cues and Routines
- Help families recognize their baby’s hunger and fullness cues, such as rooting, hand-sucking, or turning away when full.
- Support them in developing feeding routines that suit their baby’s needs while encouraging flexibility in the early days.
Transitioning to Solids When Relevant
- Offer guidance on readiness signs for starting solids (around 6 months) and discuss safe, age-appropriate first foods.
- Educate on baby-led weaning vs. purees and help families make informed choices based on their preferences.
Recognizing When to Refer Out
BirthRoot Community Doula can refer families to lactation consultants, pediatricians, or registered dietitians if there are concerns like:
- Failure to thrive or poor weight gain.
- Persistent feeding challenges.
- Food allergies or intolerances.
